Rome’s approach to Syria, in the 21st Century

Abstract:

Of the various international actors which have been involved in recent years in the Levant, one founding member of the European Union is often left out of the spotlight. Still, at least since the war in the summer of 2006 in Lebanon, Italy has increased its outreach in this part of the world. How can its policy in the region be defined and has it been coherent in regards to the institutional turmoil the country itself went through after the end of Berlusconi’s second government in May 2006? Moreover, should the proximity in Rome of the Vatican be considered a defining factor? The initial anti-clerical nature of the Italian institutions, born in the second half of the 19th century, seems something of a distant past, but can one speak of a joint-venture in the field of “politique arabe”? Obviously, since the fall of Ṣaddām Ḥusayn in 2003 the popes have had to redefine their approach. Furthermore, how is this complex Levantine involvement of Italy discussed in its domestic media and reflected in its public debate? And have the national uprisings in the Arab world which started at the end of 2010 had an impact on Italy’s policy and its business community? This way we can inform the public about what the Italian government, the shadow actor in Rome (the Catholic church), and different civil actors have all done in the last decades or so. Furthermore, it will allow us to talk more generally about the international equilibrium around Syria (from the uprising and State repression onwards).

Biography:

Prof. Johannes Waardenburg is presently teaching at the University of Milan (IULM) and responsible for the field of general history of the Arab world (from the 6th to the 21st Century). His recent monography in two volumes about the history of independent Syria (1963 – 2018) La Siria Contemporanea: ridisegnando la Carta del Vicino Oriente (Rome, Ipocan, 2021) has become the reference text in Italy on the subject. The Syrian Studies Association’s Bulletin, in its Fall 2022 issue, considers this work a milestone which will encourage historians internationally to renew their approach to the recent history of the Bilād al-Šām in general.

Letter from the President to ISA Members

President’s Perspective

December 2021

In the course of humanity, pandemics (leprosy, plagues, cholera…) have induced deep societal changes in all social, economic, and political spheres. The COVID-19 pandemic as a social phenomenon is no exception. With repeated lockdowns and a death toll of more than five million worldwide, we tend to think of COVID-19 as something that is here to stay instead of thinking of it in terms of a crisis. Sociologists not only have a responsibility to analyze the consequences but also to actively propose commitments to the civic sphere and social movements.

Despite the current situation, I have witnessed the return in hybrid format of many conferences and congresses of national sociological associations and I have been so glad to participate in many of them. ISA Research Committees are also active in organizing many events. Let me highlight the conference Decolonial Perspectives: Reclaiming our Rights as People in the Global South, organized on November 25-30, 2021 by RC47 and RC48 together with the University of the Philippines Cebu, on the 500th anniversary of the landing of Magellan on Cebu island, which symbolizes the start of the colonization process. Leading international scholars and ISA EC members (Boaventura de Sousa Santos, Sujata Patel, Éric Toussaint, Manuela Boatcă, Phoebe Zoe Maria Sanchez, Filomin Gutierrez, Geoffrey Pleyers and Bandana Purkayastha) as well as amazing Filipino researchers took part in the sessions.

At the ISA, efforts have not lessened, and the Executive Committee continues to hold regular online meetings to cope with different challenges. In the current context the ISA is not only resilient but also proactive to face these challenges. A recent terrific article by Nikolai Genov, Building Global Sociology in a Divided World (1949–1990) (Sociological Forum, 2021) tells us how the global professional community of sociologists passed the test of the Cold War concerning scientific objectivity and civic tolerance thanks to ISA (among other factors). In the time of a populist fear of “sociologizing” societal problems, sociologists are creative in connecting them to the public. As an example of such innovation, Canadian sociologists Isabelle Perreault, André Cellard and Patrice Corriveau communicated the outcome of their research on suicide through a comic book Vous avez détruit la beauté du monde : Le suicide au Québec depuis 1763.

Here are some of the activities carried about by the ISA in the last few months.

XX ISA World Congress
The XX ISA World Congress of Sociology in Melbourne, Australia has been postponed to June 25-July 1, 2023 in hybrid format. The theme is Resurgent Authoritarianism: Sociology of New Entanglements of Religions, Politics, and Economies. The deadline for submitting session proposals has been set for May 2022.

ISA Award for Excellence in Research and Practice
I am so honored to announce that Raewyn Connell, a leading sociologist from The University of Sydney, has been selected to receive the third ISA Award for Excellence in Research and Practice from among a number of excellent nominations from ISA members. Established in March 2013, this ISA Award is granted to a sociologist who advances and promotes sociological knowledge and practice through outstanding contributions to the discipline, the profession, and the ISA.

ISA Presidential project
As a reminder, my Presidential project is to articulate a better connection among National Associations, Research Committees, and publications within the ISA, targeting mainly the regions that are less represented in ISA activities. I am glad to inform you that in the Global Mapping of Sociologists (GMS) all ISA Congresses and Forums’ participants/authors, affiliations, and abstracts of sessions are now online. The research engine is an amazing tool to scrutinize the development of themes since the early 1950s.

Along this project and ISA Publication Committee’s efforts, we have continued organizing Academic Writing Workshops (AWW). Since April 2021, Vice-President for Publications Eloísa Martín conducted four AWW: at the Fulda International Autumn School (Germany), Tata Institute of Social Sciences (India), the Philippine Sociological Society (Philippines), and the University of the West Indies (Trinidad and Tobago). As for myself, I recently conducted two AWW at the Council for At-Risk Academics (Cara) for Syrian social scientists and at the University Paris 8, and have three forthcoming AWW, in Jordan and at the Syrian Association of the Social Sciences. Needless to say, the ISA editors and EC members are here to reply to any further requests for AWW.

National Associations
I am so glad to inform you that the ISA website hosts a portal for National Associations and collective affiliated members. I strongly encourage national sociological associations to let us know of activities they would like to be featured on the ISA website or in ISA electronic newsletter isagram by sending an email to isa@isa-sociology.org.

Online presence on social media
We would like to boost the online presence of the National Associations, Research Committees, Working and Thematic Groups, and deepen our interlinkages through social media. If you have an active social media account on Facebook and/or Twitter, please send their details to us so we can link them to ISA’s social media platforms and feature them on ISA website. The ISA is on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/InternationalSociologicalAssociation, on Twitter at @isa_sociology, and on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/user/isasociotube. Please like, follow, or subscribe to ISA channels and encourage your members and colleagues to do so. Please share content from the ISA website and social media channels that may be of interest to your members and colleagues and the wider public, and link your association’s or RC/WG/TG’s website to that of the ISA. We encourage you to also send us at isa@isa-sociology.org information about your events and activities so that we can post them on ISA’s Facebook and Twitter channels.

ISA Laboratory for PhD Students in Sociology
We are so glad to announce that the XV ISA International Laboratory for PhD Students in Sociology will be held on 5-11 September 2022 in Tunisia. Very soon we will announce the details. I would like to thank EC member Mounir Saidani for organizing this important event.

And finally
Much of what is accomplished by the ISA is the result of all the hard work and diverse contributions of our members. I also take this opportunity to thank our four Vice-Presidents, Filomin Gutierrez, Eloísa Martín, Geoffrey Pleyers, and Sawako Shirahase, as well as ISA Executive Committee members, ISA editors, ISA Executive Secretary Izabela Barlinska, and the ISA Secretariat staff for their work and dedication to the Association. Dr. Barlinska, who has intensely served the ISA for more than 30 years, constitutes the living memory of the Association. Sadly, she plans to retire after July 2023. The EC will soon set up a recruiting committee.

As 2021 draws to a close I wish you all a joyful holiday season and warm wishes for a new year that hopefully will bring better news for the world, and not only for humans…

Salam,

Letter from the President to ISA Members

President’s Perspective

February 2021

Greetings!

So far, 2021 has certainly not lived up to our wishes for this new year. We are currently experiencing one of the most disruptive pandemics in modern history, with 106 million confirmed cases and more than two million deaths globally. Against this background, the ISA seeks to pursue its mission working with the international sociological community through the pandemic-induced switch to online teaching/lecturing. We try to turn these predicaments into assets by democratizing the participation in scientific events with the possibility of reaching scholarly communities that cannot afford traveling, but also by reducing sociologists’ carbon footprint of air travel. Of course, we all miss the conviviality of face-to-face encounters as well as the opportunities for networking, especially for early-career researchers looking for research partners or jobs. Let us hope that the post-COVID-19 era will strike a better balance between knowledge accessibility, climate change mitigation, conviviality, and networking.

As ISA president, while all my travel plans have been cancelled, I have been honored to give many keynotes with the national associations and in other conferences and workshops and interact virtually with our scholarly community. Each time, I remind sociologists that post-COVID-19 sociology should take a serious ethical turn by proposing normative methods, presuppositions, and explicit commitments.

ISA IV Forum of Sociology: in a couple of weeks
Starting on February 23, 2021 and during six days, this IV ISA Forum of Sociology will be our first virtual Forum, with over 800 sessions, more than 3,000 papers, and the participation of sociologists from 125 countries. We owe it to the endless effort made by the Program Coordinators and Session Organizers of 53 Research Committees, 4 Working Groups, and 3 Thematic Groups.

I strongly welcome your active participation. For those who will not present a paper or chair a session, you can opt for View-Only Registration. The technology to organise a virtual meeting of this size is very expensive and many financial decisions have been taken after very thorough discussions at different levels of our Association, taking into account the difficult situation worldwide not only for ISA individual members but also for collective ones. In total, 457 registration grants have been allocated. Besides, registration fees have been reduced by 50% while a Solidarity Fund has been created for those wishing to enable sociologists experiencing hardship to participate.

Leading scholars from different continents will share their perspectives in the Forum’s Opening and Closing Plenaries: Michael Burawoy, Isabel Casimiro, Manuel Castells, Ashish Kothari, Rita Segato, Boaventura de Sousa Santos, and Maristella Svampa. This Forum will also be an opportunity for our global community to pay tribute to three of our most distinguished colleagues to which special panels are dedicated: Immanuel Wallerstein, Erik Olin Wright, and Marielle Franco. Besides hundreds of panels, let me highlight the Professional Development Sessions focusing on ISA publications, teaching sociology and social theory. There is also a special session designed for early-career sociologists, In Conversation with Senior Sociologists: Making Connections, Bridging Generations, as well as a Sociological Movies session. Check out the Forum on-line program here

This Forum wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing and patient work of Geoffrey Pleyers, Forum President, the Research Coordinating Committee, the Local Organizing Committee headed by Hermílio Santos, and the ISA Secretariat in Madrid.

The XX ISA World Congress of Sociology
The XX ISA World Congress of Sociology scheduled for 24-30 July, 2022 in Melbourne, Australia, will focus on the theme “Resurgent Authoritarianism: The Sociology of New Entanglements of Religions, Politics, and Economies.” The vertiginous rise of authoritarianism, as well as populism, xenophobia, and racism make our task as sociologists more crucial than ever. For more information on the theme, go to the Congress webpage.

Please note the April 15, 2021 deadline for submitting to isa@isa-sociology.org proposals for:
– Integrative sessions which involve at least 3 Research Committees, 3 National Associations or a combination of the two
– Regular sessions by National, Regional, Linguistic and Thematic Associations

New collective members
I am glad to welcome new regular collective members that have joined the ISA recently: the Colombian, Serbian, and Vietnamese Sociological Associations and the Paraguayan Society of Sociology. My special thanks to Filomin Gutierrez, Vice-President for National Associations.

ISA forthcoming events
Due to uncertain travel protocols, the 5th Conference of the Council of National Associations (CNA) to be held in Slovenia on the theme “Social Transformations and Sociology: Dispossessions and Empowerment” has been moved from May 10-13, 2021 to November 22-25, 2021. Each national association is expected to send a representative who will present a paper and attend the CNA business meetings. A new deadline will be announced shortly to ensure a wider participation.

And finally
Much of what is accomplished by the ISA is the result of all the hard work and diverse contributions of our members. I also take this opportunity to thank our four vice-presidents, Filomin Gutierrez, Eloísa Martín, Geoffrey Pleyers, and Sawako Shirahase, as well as ISA Executive Committee members, ISA editors, ISA Executive Secretary Izabela Barlinska, and the ISA Secretariat for their work and dedication to the Association.

Stay safe!

Letter from the President to ISA Members

President’s Perspective

September 2020

Greetings!

I hope you and your loved ones are all safe! What a terrible time we are living, seeking to cope with the existential uncertainty brought about by COVID-19. In spite of that, sociologists all over the world are deploying extraordinary energy through their publications, webinars and activism. ISA has also maintained its activities but in new and innovative forms. Despite travel restrictions, I received several invitations from national and regional associations to speak in their conference webinars and learnt a lot about the different national traditions of practicing sociology. The last one was to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Latin American Sociological Association (ALAS). The ISA has always had a special relationship with this very important regional association, which was established at the first ISA World Congress of Sociology in 1950. One of the themes I have raised is the crisis of the social sciences in terms of their weak connection with moral philosophy. Our hope is that a stronger connection could help correct the positivist trend of these disciplines and propose normative methods, presuppositions, and explicit commitments.

ISA IV Forum of Sociology

After a long process of consultations, the ISA Executive Committee (EC) decided to hold the ISA IV Forum online, on February 23-27, 2021. Yet, large Research Committees may extend the duration of the conference in order to spread sessions over more days. Despite the increased costs involved, the ISA decided to reduce the registration fees by 50%, while maintaining the possibility of paying the full amount as a contribution to a solidarity fund to enable sociologists experiencing hardship to participate. The coldness involved in holding this Forum online will be compensated by a preponderant number of attendees who can attend it without presenting a paper. I hope your active participation will defeat the coldness of social distancing in the context of the current pandemic. I would like to thank all those who work hard in making this Forum possible in this difficult time: First the President of the IV ISA Forum Geoffrey Pleyers, but also the Vice-President for Finance Sawako Shirahase, the head of the Forum Local Organizing Committee Hermilio Santos, and all EC members. For more details about the Forum go to its webpage.

New publications

I am glad to announce the publication of a series of videos on Academic Writing. This series of videos, produced by the Vice-President for Publications, Eloísa Martín, presents the main challenges of academic writing and publication in scientific journals. It reveals some of the most common mistakes in the process of manuscript submission and review, and offers some possible solutions.
Among numerous ISA publications, I would like to highlight two new volumes. The first one isSociologies in Dialogue (SAGE), co-edited by myself and Chin-Chun Yi, and available at the excellent price of $13 in paperback and $10 in ebook format. This book is the outcome of the Fourth ISA Conference of the Councils of National Associations held in May 2017 at Academia Sinica, Taiwan. The second one is the result of the monumental editorial work carried out by Breno Bringel and Geoffrey Pleyers bringing together 43 authors from 28 countries to write on policies and social movements in the face of the pandemic. A digital edition in Spanish, published by the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) and the Latin American Sociological Association (ALAS) is available in open access: Alerta global. Políticas, movimientos sociales y futuros en disputa en tiempos de pandemia. The English version will soon be published by Policy Press and Bristol University Press. You can find more contributions about COVID-19 in the webpage on Global Sociology and the Coronavirus and at ISA Online Portal.

New collective members

I am glad to welcome the following new collective members of the ISA: Saudi Social Studies Society, Vietnamese Sociological Association, Asociación Paraguaya de Sociología, Sociedad Paraguaya de Sociología, and Asociación Colombiana de Sociología. I would like to thank particularly Filomin Gutierrez, Vice-President for National Associations.

ISA forthcoming events

Our fifth Council of National Associations (CNA) Conference will be held on May 10-13, 2021 in Slovenia with the theme Social Transformations and Sociology: Dispossessions and Empowerment. Each national association is expected to send a representative who will present a paper and attend the CNA business meetings. The deadline for submission of conference abstracts has been extended to October 31, 2020 to ensure a wider participation. If your national association has not submitted any paper yet, please ask a representative to submit an abstract (maximum 250 words) by email to isa@isa-sociology.org and fcgutierrez@up.edu.ph by October 31, 2020.
The XX ISA World Congress of Sociology scheduled for July 2022 in Melbourne, Australia, will focus on the theme Resurgent Authoritarianism: The Sociology of New Entanglements of Religions, Politics, and Economies. The global rise of authoritarianism, as well as populism, xenophobia, and racism makes our task as sociologists more crucial than ever. For more information on the theme, go to the Congress webpage.

ISA human rights statements and policy work

Over the last three months the ISA Human Rights Committee has been busy issuing three statements: ISA endorsement of the Advocacy Letter to ratify International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention 190 (September 2020), ISA endorsement of Ghanian Associations (July 2020) and ISA statement against institutionalized racism (June 2020). I would like to thank ISA Human Rights Committee members Nazanin Shahrokni and Laura Oso, and the head of the Committee Eloísa Martín. Needless to say that the ISA is increasingly involved in many policy instances at the UN thanks to EC member Jan Fritz and former EC member Rosemary Barberet, but also with the International Science Council. Chih-Jou Jay Chen and myself are active in this Council. Last week I was interviewed: “How could we rethink our conceptual understanding of human development?”

And finally

I would like to congratulate Bandana Purkayastha, ISA EC member, considered “Aspired women inspire” by the SHE Foundation after being nominated by the University of KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa). Last but not least, much of what is accomplished by the ISA is the result of all the hard work and diverse contributions of our members. I also take this opportunity to thank our four Vice-Presidents, ISA EC members, ISA editors, ISA Executive Secretary Izabela Barlinska, and the ISA Secretariat for their work and dedication to the Association.

Stay safe!

Letter from the President to ISA Members

President’s Perspective

May 2020

Greetings!

The dark times of the coronavirus pandemic have changed, at an unprecedented rate, how we eat, work, shop, exercise, manage our health, socialize, and spend our free time, and will continue to do so. The current global crisis may have prompted fresh strategies to reinforce exploitation, dispossession, and neoliberal capitalism, and increased the reach of our greed and selfishness, but it has also given us an opportunity to explore and provide a new way of understanding and reclaiming our social justice and humanity. We hear every day both sad and inspiring stories about solidarity – particularly in terms of caring and food systems.

Taking sociology to task has always been an integral part of the reflection of the International Sociological Association. Our Vice-President for Research Geoffrey Pleyers has initiated a webpage on Global Sociology and the Coronavirus. The aim of this webpage is to promote initiatives and perspectives of ISA Research Committees (RCs) and national associations (NAs) on the coronavirus, its impact on our societies, and the world that may come out of it. The page already includes several international webinars, various initiatives from RCs and NAs and a blog, and we are looking forward to receiving more contributions from the RCs and NAs. The blog presently features two papers, one by myself ( Post-COVID Sociology) and one by Geoffrey Pleyers ( A Plea for Global Sociology in Times of the Coronavirus), and more will be added soon from other ISA Executive Committee (EC) members. In addition, with the collaboration of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) and the Latin American Sociological Association (ALAS) an e-book will be published by the end of this month both in English and Spanish. ISA’s magazine Global Dialogue is also preparing for its next issue (August 2020) a special feature on the current crisis. I would like to invite all members to submit articles to ISA journals, International Sociology and Current Sociology. While more efforts will come from different EC members, I would like to thank particularly Geoffrey Pleyers, Vice-President for Research and Filomin Gutierrez, Vice-President for National Associations, for their mobilization of RCs and NAs, as well as Global Dialogue’s editors Brigitte Aulenbacher and Klaus Dörre.

The ISA EC annual meetings were held successfully online, and we were able to take many decisions relevant to the ISA.

ISA forthcoming events

The IV ISA Forum of Sociology in Porto Alegre, Brazil, has been postponed to February 23-27, 2021 and a new schedule is available at the Forum webpage.

The upcoming Fifth ISA Conference of the Council of National Associations on Social Transformations and Sociology: Dispossessions and Empowerment will be held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, May 10-13, 2021. A Call for Submissions has already been circulated to national associations that can send one delegate to the conference.

The XX ISA World Congress of Sociology scheduled for July 2022 in Melbourne, Australia, will focus on the theme Resurgent Authoritarianism: The Sociology of New Entanglements of Religions, Politics, and Economies. The global rise of authoritarianism, as well as populism, xenophobia, and racism, makes our task as sociologists more crucial than ever. For more information on the theme, go to theCongress webpage.

ISA new decisions

The EC has approved the establishment of a new Thematic Group (TG) on Digital Sociology and another on Violence and Society, and the upgrading of TG08 (Society and Emotions) and TG06 (Institutional Ethnography) to Working Groups. The EC is quite conservative in accepting more new TGs as it seeks more integration between different schools of thought and themes and urges RCs’ boards to be more accommodating for new initiatives, in order to renew our sociology.

Publications

We are glad to announce the launch of ISA Online Portal. This is your one-stop spot to ISA digital publications, a platform from which you will be able to read and share its contents for free. We invite you to sign up to the platform in order to be alerted to new content which fits with your research interests.

ISA Online contains Sociopedia.isa (a repository of review articles); e-Symposium (articles of sociological interest for an international community of social scientists, providing scholarly research and applied dimensions), Social Justice and Democratization (a space to access and share resources through an open approach to research, policy, pedagogy and practices on social justice and democratization) and Global Dialogue (ISA’s digital magazine published in multiple languages, a lively forum for conducting debates and interviews within our discipline, including clashing views, visions and accounts). I would like to thank our Vice-President for Publications Eloísa Martin, her predecessor Vineeta Sinha, and Robert Rojek from SAGE for their great effort for the realization of such a portal.

And finally

Much of what is accomplished by the ISA is the result of all the hard work and diverse contributions of our members. I also take this opportunity to thank our four Vice-Presidents, ISA EC members, ISA editors, ISA Executive Secretary Izabela Barlinska, and the ISA Secretariat for their work and dedication to the Association.

Let me conclude on a positive note. Here in Lebanon, my colleagues at the American University of Beirut have measured a reduction of air pollution by 36%, and the reduction of the noise pollution sounds as an invitation for birds to sing along at my window, in the intimacy of self-reflection.

Stay safe!

5th ISA CNA Conference in 2021

Our 5th Council of National Associations Conference will be held on May 10-13, 2021 in Slovenia.  The theme of the conference is “Social Transformations and Sociology: Dispossessions and Empowerment.” Please refer to the attached Call for Submissions. The deadline for submission of paper abstracts (maximum 250 words) will be on September 7, 2020. Abstracts must be sent by email to: isa@isa-sociology.org and fcgutierrez@up.edu.ph

Each National Association (NA) is expected to send a representative to the conference to attend  CNA business meetings and to present a paper on the theme. Accommodation for one delegate per NA will be provided, and paper presenters will be entitled to a partial travel subsidy. In my previous communication, I have mentioned that ISA would like to ensure the diverse representation of National Associations from amongst their members at the CNA Conference, thus NAs are requested starting in our 2021 conference to limit the attendance of a particular representative up to two times at most. The National Associations Liaison Committee (NALC) in the Executive Committee will further develop the conference program and  list agenda items for our business meeting. In time I will consult you for any suggestions and additions on these matters.

Web Resources on the Coronavirus Crisis for Sociologists

ISA is currently collating in a blog all online links to sociological discussions, webinars, forums and similar resources by NAs and their respective social scientific communities to foster global discussions about the coronavirus crises.  Please send to us links to such resources that your national association may have or know of by sending an email to: isa@isa-sociology.org

—–

Dear members of the ISA,

In the context of this global pandemic and in these dark times, our thoughts are with you and with your beloved ones.

As you may already know, the Executive Committee of the ISA decided to postpone the IV ISA Forum of Sociology in Porto Alegre, Brazil, to February 23-27, 2021.

All activities that have been prepared for the Forum will be maintained and the abstract selected for the Forum in July 2020 remain valid for the Forum in February 2021. Preliminary sessions program is available at https://isaconf.confex.com/isaconf/forum2020/webprogrampreliminary/programs.html

We have set a new calendar that allows Research Committees, Working and Thematic Groups to update and re-open some of their panels to new participants to replace the colleagues who will not be able to join us in February 2021.

16 – 25 October 2020: RC/WG/TG publish Calls for new abstracts
26 October – 12 November 2020: Submission of new abstracts via online platform
24 November 2020: Authors are notified about the acceptance or rejection of their abstracts
15 December 2020: Presenters final registration deadline

The RC/WG/TG will start diffusing the new calls for abstract in September. We hope you will join us in Porto Alegre for this 2021 ISA Forum of Sociology that will be a unique opportunity to learning from colleagues from all continents and sharing analyses of the crisis, its social impacts and the world that will emerge out of it.

In the meanwhile, please keep safe and take care of yourself and of the people you love.
